Camp Mead supports Vermont's rich artistic community with opportunity -- five duplex cabins that were formerly part of the Camp Mead roadside motel of yesteryear overlooking the Green at Camp Mead. The cabins are rustic and have a modicum of electricity available to them and the owners want to make each of these ten half-cabins available to artists for a small fee by the month, $150.00 or, for the season, $600.00. They are looking for a mixture of artistic disciplines, sculptors, painters, fiber artists, performance artists.
They will be promoting these as open studios and will want them to be open from Thursday through Saturday for patrons to appreciate.
Camp Mead sits on the banks of the Winooski River overlooking the Middlesex Hydroelectric Dam and just upstream of the confluence with the Mad River. An historic Civilian Conservation Corps work camp in the 1930s, Camp Mead housed men and women who worked on numerous public works projects, including the flood control projects of Waterbury dam and reservoir and Wrightsville dam and reservoir.
Camp Mead was a hot bed of creative activity then and still is to this day. Camp Mead is on Route 2 at exit 9 on I-89. It is at present the home to Red Hen Bakery and Café, The Mud Pottery Studio and Sculpture Gallery, Nutty Steph’s Chocolates and Granola and The Hive Artist Collective and Gallery. Camp Mead is a place of sustenance for the body and the soul.
Camp Mead will begin hosting a food truck afternoon and evening each week throughout the summer season with local musicians. The Green at Camp Mead behind Red Hen will be where these gatherings of social congress take place.
